The goal was never less technology. It was better technology, the kind your child builds rather than just watches.
The guilt is real, and it isn't your fault
If you have ever stood in the doorway watching your child glued to a screen and felt a quiet knot of worry, you are in good company. Almost every parent we speak to carries some version of it: the half-eaten dinner, the third reminder to come off the tablet, the nagging sense that something more useful could be happening.
Here is the part worth saying out loud. That worry does not make you a bad parent. It makes you an attentive one. Screens are designed by some of the cleverest engineers alive to be hard to put down, and holding the line against that, day after day, while also working and running a household, is genuinely difficult.
So let us set the guilt down for a moment. It has done its job. It got your attention. Now we can ask a better question than the one that tends to keep us up at night.
The wrong question, and the better one
Most screen-time advice fixes on a single number: how many hours? It is an understandable instinct. Hours are easy to count, easy to limit, easy to feel in control of.
But hours alone tell you almost nothing. An hour spent scrolling through clips chosen by an algorithm is not the same as an hour spent building a game, debugging a robot or working out why a line of code refuses to run. One leaves a child a little more restless. The other leaves them a little more capable.
The better question is not "how much?" It is "consuming or creating?" That single shift changes everything. It moves the conversation away from restriction, which children resist, and towards direction, which they can actually get excited about. You stop being the person who confiscates the device and start being the person who shows them what it can really do.
The difference between watching and making
Think about the gap between watching someone play a video game and building one yourself. The first is entertainment. The second is engineering, design, problem-solving and storytelling all at once, dressed up as play.
When a child moves from consumer to creator, the same device that once worried you becomes a workshop. A tablet becomes a place to design characters. A laptop becomes a place to write code that makes something move on screen. A small robot kit on the kitchen table becomes a lesson in cause and effect that no worksheet could match.
The skills underneath are the ones that genuinely matter. Breaking a large problem into small steps. Trying something, watching it fail, and trying again without falling apart. Patience. Logic. The deep, focused attention that the scrolling world quietly erodes. Creation rebuilds the very muscles that passive consumption wears down.
There is an emotional shift, too. A child who has made something feels a particular kind of pride, the pride of "I built that." It is steadier and longer-lasting than the fleeting pull of the next video. Once a child has tasted it, they often start choosing it on their own.
Small ways to tip the balance at home
You do not need to overhaul your household or become a coder yourself to begin this shift. You only need to nudge the balance, a little at a time.
Try swapping one passive habit for one creative one each week. Rather than only watching gaming videos, let them spend some of that time building a simple game in a free, beginner-friendly tool. Rather than consuming someone else's animation, encourage them to make a short one of their own.
Ask to see what they have made, and mean it. Children pour real effort into their creations, and a parent who looks closely, asks how it works and is genuinely curious gives that effort a reason to continue. You do not have to understand the code. "Show me how you did that" is enough.
Reframe the language at home as well. Instead of "stop playing on that thing," try "what are you going to build today?" It is a small change of words, but it quietly tells your child that you see the screen as a place to make things, not just somewhere to switch off.
Building towards a future they will actually live in
Step back and the bigger picture comes into focus. The world your child will grow into is being shaped, right now, by people who can bend technology to their will rather than simply use what is handed to them. Whatever path they choose, from medicine to music to running their own business, fluency with code, AI and how machines think is becoming closer to reading and writing than to a niche speciality.
The children who thrive will not necessarily be the ones who spent the fewest hours on screens. They will be the ones who learned, early, that a device is a tool for making, and that they are allowed to be the maker.
